NASHVILLE, TN _ January 16th, 2012 – Country rocker Matt Kennon’s 2010 Top 20 and #1 Heatseeker Billboard hit “The Call” shined a spotlight on a conversation. That conversation inspired another conversation, and another. Word spread, and soon everyone was talking about “The Call,” reaching out to one another, sharing its reaffirming message to help prevent suicide.

Here In 2012, Matt keeps the conversation going. With his new recording, “You Had to Pick On Me,” he continues the conversation in song.

“He said, ‘No one is nice to me, they laugh at me.’ He told me he didn’t have any friends.” Matt shares the tender meeting he had with a second grader named Logan. “And I said, ‘Well, you do now.’”

MattKennonTruck400x400It was just supposed to be a lunch with his niece and his sister, at the time a teacher’s aide at the Rocky Plains Elementary School in Georgia. And there was Logan, sad and alone, a victim of bullying. Matt answered the call and reached out.

Matt extended his conversation of hope to Logan, and then to the student that was bullying Logan. And then, to the rest of us. And now it’s your turn. “You Had To Pick On Me” isn’t just another great country song with gritty vocals and an anthem-like chorus that stays with you. It’s an honest plea to stop bullying. It’s music that matters. It’s a conversation we should all join.

Matt’s new single is his stand against bullying. “It’s not fluff, it’s not fictional. People are hurting.” Matt’s enthusiasm is infectious. That’s because he truly believes together we can make a difference. “Bullying isn’t just in schools. I’ve been bullied, it goes on in the industry, it goes on in the workplace.”

And wherever the conversation leads, Matt will go. Check Matt’s website for upcoming tour information. And join in on the conversation. “Friend,” “Follow,” “Share,” “Like,” “Link,” and help spread the word. Festivals, schools, educational facilities, workplace inspirational seminars and celebrations - if there’s anywhere you want to open a dialogue through Matt’s music, do it. Contact Matt for bookings with your ideas. Fan videos, contests… there are lots of ways to get involved. Matt welcomes and encourages it. What do you have to say?

Maybe it’s because Matt Kennon’s about to become a father. Maybe it’s because there really is someone out there right now this second that desperately needs to hear this new song with this message. Maybe it’s because Matt has endured some personal challenges, just as everyone has. Logan isn’t alone; he’s one of many. That’s why it’s so important, now more than ever, to talk about it. After “The Call” Matt waited until he had something else to say, something that could continue and matter.

Bullying is cruel, and unnecessary, and unconscionable. Don’t wait until it’s too late to talk about it, before you share the message.

Oh, and Logan? “He’s doing well,” Matt sighs with relief. “He’s in 3rd grade now, yeah, he’s doing very well.”

“You Had To Pick On Me” is available for download on iTunes amongst other outlets. Are you ready talk about music that matters? Start by listening.

Matt Kennon’s Touring Schedule Includes Appearances at CMA Festival June 12th And A Return to The Grand Ole Opry in July 2011

Country rocker and indy success story Matt Kennon (www.mattkennon.com) came to Nashville with
the credo “record contract or restraining order” when he left the clubs of his native Atlanta Georgia.
His grit and determination led him to top the charts with a #1 Heatseeker on the Billboard charts and a
Top 20 (#19) for 2010’s self-titled Matt Kennon that included the radio hit “The Call”. The song struck a
chord with listeners and spoke of a well-timed phone call that dealt with Kennon’s personal experiences
regarding suicide and teen pregnancy and the emotionally-charged video received airplay on both GAC
and CMT.

Bobby Peacock of Roughstock.com commented “Matt Kennon's debut is a surprisingly fresh sound, and
a testament to the treasures that can be found on the smaller, independent labels. While at times it's
more rock than country, the consistently potent lyrics and gritty vocals are a killer combination”.

The whiskey-voice Georgian was not discouraged in the least with the demise of his record label Bamajam in 2010 and continued writing from his early life experiences of chasing whiskey, women and rock ‘n roll that culminated in the release of his sophomore release 77 in May 2011.

A southern city boy, Matt delivers songs in a country rock ‘n’ roll style depicting life, love and loss and he hopes 77 will bring more listeners to the format.

Tracks from 77 include “Drive It Like You Stole It”, “The Past Stops Here”, an unreleased version of “The Call”, and the auspicious “You Had To Pick On Me”, which deals with the topic of bullying and written by Kennon after a discussion with his sister who is a grade school teacher.

Randy Travis included the Matt Kennon/Noah Gordon penned song “Turn It Around” on his “I Told You So, the Ultimate Hits of Randy Travis” collection of greatest hits.

Kennon, who has shared the stage with Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, Eric Church, Hank Williams Jr., Gretchen Wilson, Uncle Kracker, and Mark Chesnutt, has kept
up an aggressive touring schedule. Upcoming live appearances include Nashville’s Hard Rock Café at the CMA Festival June 12th, and his fifth appearance at The Grand Ole Opry in July, 2011.

Matt Kennon interview with American Songwriter

Wednesday, 11 August 2010 19:23

AS_logo-grey-gradientMatt Kennon, Georgia native and up-and-coming country artist, is climbing the charts with his single “The Call.” Landing a spot in the Top 30, “The Call” touches on difficult life events that many people face. Kennon’s deep, raspy voice complements the seriousness of the messages he sends to his audience – whether it’s in “The Call” or other tracks off of his new EP. The son of an impoverished woman, Kennon found support from his adoptive parents and now writes about his personal struggles and thoughts. Although it may not always be easy to convey these emotions, Kennon believes that honesty is vital when it comes to his songwriting: “I don’t want to sing about anything that I haven’t been through.” With his booming voice and opinionated lyrics, he tackles the challenge of writing genuine and honesty country music.

Matt Kennon reviewed on Southern Twang!

bigtrangOn the follow-up to his debut single (the emotionally-charged “The Call”) Matt Kennon shows off a deep, smoke-stained voice that brims with masculinity. Once again, however, the toughness he naturally exudes when he sings is contrasted by a deeply sensitive lyric that delves into complex, decidedly adult emotional issues.

“You Can Still Wear White” tells the story of a single mother (the narrator’s fiancée) who struggles with whether or not to wear a white wedding dress at her upcoming wedding. Kennon reassures his lover that she can still wear white, “no matter where [she’s] been”—a simple but touching statement that speaks volumes on behalf of the redemptive power of love.

To that end, the song is a point of encouragement for anyone who has struggled to overcome the social stigmas that come with choices made and life lived. After all, what’s more freeing than the belief that our past sins leave no stain on our present or future?

There’s something very intimate about that sentiment, and emotional intimacy is something country music is lacking of late.

That intimacy runs through the backbone of the song, and so “You Can Still Wear White” scores points conceptually. How well that intimacy is threaded into the song from a craft standpoint, however, is up for question. It’s a genuinely touching idea, but the execution is a bit heavy-handed. Kennon’s exposition is clunky, utilizing an unnatural “question and answer” format to nudge the story along. Kennon’s questions and responses seem artificially loaded with lyrical furniture, as if he’s trying to paint the scene without “telling” us the scene.

Songwriters are taught to “show, don’t tell,” but here the craft element protrudes.

This song is effective even in spite of that clunkiness, primarily because of Kennon’s self-assured delivery. There’s a calming confidence in his voice, and a demonstrated strength in the way he takes control of this situation, essentially telling his lover to do what she wants regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Strength like that breeds safety and comfort, two things that many women crave. Because of that, Kennon comes off very positively in this song; he’s sensitive without being weak, and that’s sexy. That this gruff-voiced Georgia native is able to come off as both emotionally attuned and desirable is quite a feat, and bodes well for his chances.

On top of that, Kennon’s a capable, identifiable singer. This is a song that deserves a shot with listeners.

Matt Kennon Review | Country Weekly

CWLogo-Main3.5/4 Stars!

For many country newcomers, the spotlight may shine but a moment or two. With a unique, masculine vocal and a mostly solid set of songs, Georgia-born Matt Kennon seems ready to face the risk of extinction head-on with his album’s leadoff track, “Drive It Like You Stole It.” His rocker-with-a-cause image carries through the rest of the set, thanks to songs like his Top 30 single “The Call” or “If I Was Any Kind  of Man.” His gravelly voice instantly sets him apart from the endless pack of country-pop wannabes. That distinctive voice and independent spirit also give strength to righteous barnburners like “Too Loud” and “Some People Piss Me Off,” but overwhelms the more tender moments on “Then There Was You.” Some of his best vocals come when he emulates his hero Travis Tritt and lets loose on the soulful, midtempo “Cry Like Memphis” and the album’s refreshing take on selfless devotion, “That’s Love.”
